Brainbox vs the Boogie #4: The Hornets Trio + Mike Rudd

Sat 30 May 2026

Odeon Richmond and Werner Martin's 3CR Hot Damn Tamale show proudly present this rare encounter.

Since Mike Rudd mooted the concept last year, there have been three encounters of Brainbox vs the Boogie and still nobody quite knows what it all means, aside from it featuring the same two outfits, Craig Horne’s Hornets and Mike Rudd’s Indelibles.

Except on this occasion, it doesn’t.

For the sake of this argument, The Hornets is now The Hornets trio and The Indelibles is now simply Mike Rudd.

The Hornets trio comprises of Craig Horne, vocals, guitar, Jeff Burstin, lead guitar and Bruce Haymes, piano. A lot of entertainingly growly Blues and some up-tempo boogie qualifies them for the top spot on the night and you might be tempted to jig along to some of the more compelling boogies.

Mike Rudd, vocals, guitar and harmonica is aided and abetted by George Butrumlis, piano accordion and harmonies in presenting songs that Rudd has written since the late sixties as performed by his bands, Spectrum, The Indelible Murtceps and Ariel.

Both outfits represent a musical approach that was perfected in Melbourne during the seventies and are clearly Living Treasures. Time to join them at Odeon Richmond in Brainbox vs the Boogie.
